Zohran Mamdani Net Worth as He Takes Office...
As New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani prepares to take office, his finances have been a topic of discussion amongst New York voters and Americans at large. Despite calling himself a “nepo baby,” Mamdani previously declared just $2,000 in his bank account on his financial disclosure. Why It Matters Mamdani built his mayoral campaign around socialist ideals, advocating for greater affordability in New York City by freezing rent and policies to boost social equity. Mamdani’s personal financial background has been described as privileged by some, as he was raised by his Columbia University professor father and an Oscar-nominated filmmaker mother. New York City Mayor-elect speaks during a press conference on November 20, 2025, in New York City. What To Know While Mamdani’s disclosures revealed only $2,000 in the bank, he had a state lawmaker's salary of $131,000 for five years. He also held assets in his birth country, Uganda: four acres of land he acquired worth between $150,000 and $250,000. No U.S. property or investments were disclosed, however. Mamdani’s parents have relative wealth, with his Oscar-nominated filmmaker mother, Mira Nair, having sold a Chelsea two-bedroom in 2019 for $1.45 million. Meanwhile, his father, Mahmood Mamdani, is a professor of African history and colonialism at Columbia University. The estimated salary for this type of role is $308,000 a year, according to American Association of University Professors data. Mamdani’s own history includes work for several advocacy groups and nonprofits after graduating from Bowdoin College. His financial disclosures to the New York City Campaign Finance Board reveal more than $4 million in private funds received and a little over $13 million in public funds. Forbes estimates his net worth at roughly $200,000, far less than most politicians at his level. Forbes also reported that Mamdani lives in a $2,250 per month rent-stabilized apartment in Astoria and doesn’t own a car. Newsweek reached out to Mamdani for comment via email. What People Are Saying New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani said in a statement, as reported by Business Insider: “I will be a mayor for the line cooks on Steinway, for the children swinging at Dutch Kills Playground, for the bus riders waiting for the Q101. While I may no longer live in Astoria, Astoria will always live inside me and the work I do.“ Alex Beene, a financial literacy instructor for the University of Tennessee at Martin, told Newsweek: “Any newly elected leader who made campaign promises centered on higher taxation and the wealthy ‘paying their fair share’ usually faces an additional layer of scrutiny in their personal finances. If he or she has a net worth in the millions or billions, then the crafted image of that individual being more financially like his or her constituents might quickly be deflated.” What Happens Next Mamdani will be the youngest New York mayor at age 34. In his new role, he will also get a salary boost to $258,750. While his salary as mayor is lower than that of many other cities, he will be earning far more than the $174,000 annual salary that most U.S. senators and House members receive. “In the case of Zohran Mamdani, his estimated net worth of around $200,000 is a far cry from the value of nearly 350,000 millionaires living in New York City,” Beene said. “The real test won't be his net worth coming into office but after years of serving.”
