WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump said the U.S. must respond as he accused Iran of shooting down an Apache helicopter that crashed near the Strait of Hormuz. Trump, in a June 9 post on Truth Social, said the two pilots on board are safe and uninjured. "Nevertheless, the United States must, of necessity, respond to this attack," the president said. The New York Times reported the crew of an Apache gunship had been rescued on Monday, June 8, after the aircraft went down near the Iran-controlled waterway. The resumption of the tenuous ceasefire comes as Washington tries to reach an agreement with Tehran to end the more than three-month-old war. Despite renewed fighting between Israel and Iran, Trump has said he believes Iran wants to secure a peace deal with the U.S. ‒ a claim he has made repeatedly during negotiations.
