Top Goldman Sachs lawyer Kathy Ruemmler to resign over Epstein...
Goldman Sachs’ top lawyer, Kathy Ruemmler, has quit the Wall Street giant over her ties to convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, the company’s CEO, David Solomon, said in a statement on Thursday night. The move, announced four hours after markets had closed in New York, comes after 200 West Street’s senior legal eagle faced weeks of scrutiny over years-long correspondence with the disgraced late financier in which she discussed her personal life and even sought career advice. Emails between the pair came to light after a recent document dump by the Justice Department that has exposed Epstein’s deep ties to the titans of US politics, business, and finance. “Throughout her tenure, Kathy has been an extraordinary general counsel, and we are grateful for her contributions and sound advice on a wide range of consequential legal matters for the firm,” Solomon said. “As one of the most accomplished professionals in her field, Kathy has also been a mentor and friend to many of our people, and she will be missed,” he added. “I accepted her resignation, and I respect her decision.” Ruemmler’s departure will be effective from June 30 this year, the 54-year-old said in a statement issued via a spokeswoman. “Since I joined Goldman Sachs six years ago, it has been my privilege to help oversee the firm’s legal, reputational, and regulatory matters; to enhance our strong risk management processes; and to ensure that we live by our core value of integrity in everything we do. My responsibility is to put Goldman Sachs’ interests first,” the lawyer who previously served as White House counsel to President Barack Obama said.
