I hope your week is off to a terrific start. It was a big weekend around our way. It was the first time my partner brought her five-year-old for a sleepover at my place. We went to a sushi place for dinner, the arcade afterward and then brunch on Sunday morning. Things went pretty smoothly but my goodness that little one is a dynamo of energy. I think it was an important step toward figuring out if and when I might move in with them. So I’m glad it went well. Even if I did wake up at 7AM on a Sunday. 😩 We have a great little community on Discord, where we chat about NYT Connections, the rest of the NYT games and all kinds of other stuff. Everyone who has joined has been lovely. It’s a fun hangout spot, and you’re more than welcome to hang out with us. Discord is also the best way to give me any feedback about the column, especially on the rare (or not-so-rare) occasions that I mess something up. I don’t look at the comments or Twitter much. How To Play NYT Connections MORE FOR YOU Connections is a free, popular New York Times daily word game. You get a new puzzle at midnight every day. You can play on the NYT’s website or Games app. You’re presented with a grid of 16 words. Your task is to arrange them into four groups of four by figuring out the links between them. The groups could be things like items you can click, names for research study participants or words preceded by a body part. There’s only one solution for each puzzle, and you’ll need to be careful when it comes to words that might fit into more than one category. You can shuffle the words to perhaps help you see links between them. Each group is color coded. The yellow group is usually the easiest to figure out, blue and green fall in the middle, and the purple group is usually the most difficult one. The purple group often involves wordplay. Select four words you think go together and press Submit. If you make a guess and you’re incorrect, you’ll lose a life. If you’re close to having a correct group, you might see a message telling you that you’re one word away from getting it right, but you’ll still need to figure out which one to swap. If you make four mistakes, it’s game over. Let’s make sure that doesn’t happen with the help of some hints, and, if you’re really struggling, today’s Connections answers. As with Wordle and other similar games, it’s easy to share results with your friends on social media and group chats. If you have an NYT All Access or Games subscription, you can access the publication’s Connections archive. This includes every previous game of Connections, so you can go back and play any of those that you have missed. Aside from the first 60 games or so, you should be able to find our hints Google if you need them! Today’s Connections answers are... 🟨 Yellow group — curses (EXPLETIVES, FOUR-LETTER WORDS, PROFANITY, SWEARING) 🟩 Green group — in "A Visit From St. Nicholas" (CHRISTMAS, HOUSE, MOUSE, STIRRING) 🟦 Blue group — worn by Earring Magic Ken (EARRING, MESH SHIRT, NECKLACE, PLEATHER VEST) 🟪 Purple group — starting with possessive determiners (HERRING, HISTAMINE, MYSTERY, OUROBOROS) Sure, the potty mouth-related words seemed clear enough, but the purples seemed eminently clear today. I appreciate the symbolism of the OUROBOROS, but it just screamed that there was some kind of wordplay going on for the purples. Having that, HERRING and HISTAMINE all in the same column made the connection clear, and it only took a moment to realize MYSTERY was the other word I needed. I figured I may as well get the yellows taken care of since those were just getting in the way of the remaining groups. I didn’t see what else I could have done at that point other than group up the clothing and accessories. That grouping seemed very niche. Perhaps it’s one that’s simply outside my cachet of cultural knowledge. There are suggestions that Earring Magic Ken was the highest-selling Ken doll of all time, but I don't believe I've ever heard of it. Nor, for that matter, am I familiar enough with the poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas" (also known as "The Night Before Christmas") to have gotten the greens. Another tough one today! It relied a bit too heavily on cultural knowledge. I'm very glad I spotted the purples. Otherwise, my now-186 win streak would have been in trouble. I don’t think anyone who listened to "Lowlife," an enjoyable slice of reggae pop, when it came out a decade ago would have imagined where YouTube performance artist Poppy would go. She's now a two-time Grammy nominee for best metal performance and is putting out some pretty darn great heavy music. There’s pretty much zero chance you’d hear her play "Lowlife" live now.
