I hope you’re having a wonderful week. I’m fortunate enough to be in the position where game developers and publishers often send me advanced copies of games in the hope of gaining coverage for their projects. I try not to take that for granted, but I can’t promise coverage. I try to play every game they proactively send me, but there are just so many games these days. I wouldn’t be able to write about all of them. I also prioritize covering games I do ask for access to. That seems only fair. I still consider everything I’ve played when it comes to putting together my annual list of the best (okay, my favorite) games of the year. It’s impossible to play everything and I’m trying to be more careful about not overburdening myself in any case. I have to be increasingly decisive when it comes to figuring out what to play and what to let go. A game might be in a genre I don’t typically gel with, or there might be something about the art style that doesn’t click for me in the trailers. Things like that might send games to the bottom of my to-play list, and I may never get around to checking those out. There was one game I was hoping to try after a copy came my way. I installed it and was ready to hop in when I loaded up the game’s Steam page to get a refresher on the details. Steam requires developers and publishers to disclose any use of generative AI in their games. Lo and behold, a disclaimer stated this game featured voiceovers that were partially created using AI tools. MORE FOR YOU That’s a hard nope from me. Either pay a voice actor to do that work or don’t have voiceovers in your game. It’s that simple. It might be the case that I unwittingly play games that do employ generative AI, but I’d really rather not. We have a great little community on Discord, where we chat about NYT Connections, the rest of the NYT games and all kinds of other stuff. Everyone who has joined has been lovely. How To Play NYT Connections Connections is a free, popular New York Times daily word game. You get a new puzzle at midnight every day. You can play on the NYT’s website or Games app. You’re presented with a grid of 16 words. Your task is to arrange them into four groups of four by figuring out the links between them. The groups could be things like items you can click, names for research study participants or words preceded by a body part. There’s only one solution for each puzzle, and you’ll need to be careful when it comes to words that might fit into more than one category. You can shuffle the words to perhaps help you see links between them. Each group is color coded. The yellow group is usually the easiest to figure out, blue and green fall in the middle, and the purple group is usually the most difficult one. The purple group often involves wordplay. Select four words you think go together and press Submit. If you make a guess and you’re incorrect, you’ll lose a life. If you’re close to having a correct group, you might see a message telling you that you’re one word away from getting it right, but you’ll still need to figure out which one to swap. If you make four mistakes, it’s game over. Let’s make sure that doesn’t happen with the help of some hints, and, if you’re really struggling, today’s Connections answers. As with Wordle and other similar games, it’s easy to share results with your friends on social media and group chats. If you have an NYT All Access or Games subscription, you can access the publication’s Connections archive. This includes every previous game of Connections, so you can go back and play any of those that you have missed. Today’s Connections answers are... 🟨 Yellow group — what you might see on a Christmas tree (ANGEL, CANDY CANE, STRING LIGHTS, TINSEL) 🟩 Green group — clean up, as a photograph (AIRBRUSH, FIX, PHOTOSHOP, TOUCH UP) 🟦 Blue group — French food words (CORNICHON, PAIN, PAMPLEMOUSSE, VINAIGRETTE) 🟪 Purple group — things with cells (HONEYCOMB, ORGANISM, SOLAR PANEL, SPREADSHEET) As I was writing out the word list, AIRBRUSH was a pretty strong clue for the yellows. I was going to go with that first, but SPREADSHEET caught my eye. Along with ORGANISM, those clearly both had cells. As do HONEYCOMB and SOLAR PANEL. I figured that group would have a higher difficultly level than the photo words, so I got the purples first. I won’t lie, the first thing I thought of when I saw PAIN was "bread," because I live in a French-speaking city and I’m also actively avoiding buying the stuff. It's killing me because I love bread so much, but I have to shed pounds and I lose all self-control when I have bread at home. Anyway, the blues were no problem at all even though je déteste les CORNICHONs. At that point, I was able to see both of the remaining groups. I wasn’t sure what order they'd be in, so I took a gamble. I got the greens and then the yellows. That, my friends, is a reverse rainbow for win 188 of my current streak.
