Raiders say Ravens backed out of Maxx Crosby trade

Four days after the Raiders agreed to trade star defensive end Maxx Crosby to the Ravens for two first-round picks, the deal is off. On social media Tuesday night, the Raiders posted the following: “The Baltimore Ravens have backed out of our trade agreement for Maxx Crosby.” ESPN reported that he failed his physical, which would void the trade. He had surgery to fix a torn meniscus in his left knee just two months ago and was in Baltimore on Tuesday, presumably for medical exams. Unwinding the trade has repercussions across the NFL. The Bears monitored the Crosby market; as recently as one week ago, they were the gambling favorite to land him. Like many teams around the NFL, though, the Bears agreed to deals with pending free agents that will become official once they pass physicals after the league year opens Wednesday. They have an estimated $9 million in salary cap space left, per Spotrac, and Crosby has a 2026 salary cap hit worth almost $36 million. Teams can create extra cap space by restructuring contracts. General manager Ryan Poles said this month the Bears would be careful about how much of those financial obligations they push into the future. The Raiders spent wildly this week, too, with center Tyler Linderbaum’s $60 million guaranteed salary their biggest outlay. They’re expected to have cap room left to put Crosby back on the roster without scuttling any free-agent deals, but they’ve lost trade leverage. Any team wanting to trade for Crosby will offer less than the 2026 and 2027 first-round picks the Ravens gave up. Crosby grew frustrated with Raiders brass last season, leading to the trade. It’s unclear if he’d be willing to return — or if the Raiders would wait until closer to the draft to explore another deal.
