New York will become the first state to impose a moratorium on the construction of large data centers. Governor Kathy Hochul is signing an executive order to pause the building of new data centers for a year so that the state can implement new regulations on them. CNBC reported the news from the New York governor’s office. “As data center development threatens to hike up utility bills, deplete our natural resources, and create uncertainty for New Yorkers, it’s my responsibility to take action and lead,” Hochul said in a statement. While the moratorium is active, lawmakers will look to implement regulations and standards around the energy and water consumption of data centers. This makes New York the first state in America to impose such a restriction. Other states have attempted to do the same, but without success. Last week, a Meta data center was blamed for contaminating water in a Wyoming community.
