Gia Patel stars as Mary, while Ethan Thorne plays Joseph. Corinne Furman, Paulina Gálvez, Mohamed Zouaoui, Chaouqi Abdellatif, Saif Al-Warith, Anthony Barclay, Alejandro Barrios, Abdellatif Chaouqi, Ibrahim Elouahabi, Robert Goodman, Ché Grant, Kods Joundoul, Marco Lo Chiatto, Sinan Sicimoglu, Stefano Venturi, and Alin Wishka also appear in the special, which David Cunningham directs. Costner spoke to America Magazine about the special, saying that “the stories of the Bible are fantastic” and adding that he “had this chance to maybe talk about [these stories] in a mildly different way…to maybe reinvest in the story that’s managed to endure all these years, all these centuries.” The special strives to show a historically accurate version of the nativity story, including re-imagining the place of Jesus’ birth not as an inn or barn as is often shown in modern retellings, but in a cave instead, a more accurate choice considering the time that these events allegedly took place.
