After years of speculation that the Housemaid author was keeping her true identity a secret—employing wigs and glasses to help her lead a double life—McFadden has finally revealed she is actually Sara Cohen, a doctor who treats brain disorders. "I'm at a point in my career when I'm tired of this being a secret,” McFadden confessed to USA Today in an interview published April 8. “I’m tired of people debating if I'm a real person or if I'm three men. I am a real person and I have a real identity and I don't have anything to hide." And while her glasses are real, the hair is indeed fake, with McFadden choosing to wear wigs because she has “no idea how to style my hair.” The Brain Damage author explained that she’d originally chosen to use a pseudonym in an effort to ensure her career as a novelist—which kicked off with 2013’s The Devil Wears Scrubs—didn’t conflict with her job as a physician.
