Here’s who New England lawmakers are bringing to the State...
Attending the State of the Union: Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren: Warren’s guest is Dr. Geralde Gabeau, the founder and executive director of Immigrant Family Services Institute Inc. “Dr. Gabeau’s leadership shows us what it means to wake up every day and stand up for what’s right. Immigrants are our neighbors, friends, and community members — and Donald Trump’s cruel immigration agenda and ICE’s violence are making all of us less safe,” said Senator Warren in a statement. “Dr. Gabeau’s work makes our communities stronger, and I’m proud to have her by my side.” Representative Seth Moulton of Salem: Moulton has invited Marcelo Gomes da Silva as his guest at the State of the Union. Gomes da Silva was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents last year after his student visa expired without his knowledge. He was held in detention for nearly a week at an ICE field office in Burlington. “I invited Marcelo to join me at the State of the Union because his story captures what’s broken in our immigration system right now,” said Moulton in a statement. “He is exactly the kind of young person America should be investing in, not locking up. If we want to call ourselves a nation of opportunity, we should start by uplifting young people like Marcelo.” Representative Jake Auchincloss of Newton: Auchincloss has invited Amanda Blount, the executive director at the Literacy Center in Attleboro, to promote the work she does providing adult literacy education. New Hampshire: Senator Jeanne Shaheen: Shaheen’s guest is Elsy Cipriani, the executive director of the New Hampshire Food Bank, to highlight the rising cost of living. New Hampshire Senator Maggie Hassan: Hassan invited a New Hampshire small business owner who has been impacted by Trump’s tariff campaign. Representative Maggie Goodlander of New Hampshire: Goodlander has invited Shaun Coffey, a veteran and mental health advocate who received a service dog through a program called Operation Delta Dog. Goodlander is cosponsoring the Service Dogs Assisting Veterans Act, which will establish a Department of Veterans Affairs grant program and will expand veterans’ access to psychiatric service dogs. Rhode Island Senator Jack Reed: Reed has invited Rhode Island Secretary of State Gregg Amore, who protects the security of Rhode Island elections. Representative Seth Magaziner of Rhode Island: Magaziner invited Lynn Blais, president of the United Nurses and Allied Professionals, which is the largest nursing union in Rhode Island. Senator Peter Welch: Welch has invited Alyssa Black, a Vermonter whose health insurance premiums have recently spiked. Other New England lawmakers who are planning to attend include Representatives Stephen Lynch of Boston, William Keating of Cape Cod, and the delegation’s lone Republican, Maine Senator Susan Collins. Attending People’s State of the Union: Massachusetts Senator Ed Markey: Markey invited Gladys Vega, the president and CEO of La Colaborativa, to join him at the “People’s State of the Union.” La Colaborativa is a social services organization that supports immigrants in the Boston region. “Gladys Vega embodies the type of leadership we need at this moment — community-focused, strategic, energetic, and filled with empathy,” said Senator Markey in a statement. “The word ‘impossible’ is not in her vocabulary. Gladys Vega is a hero, and I am proud to have her join me in Washington DC to fight for where the real power lies with our country — the people.” Representative Becca Balint of Vermont: Balint is planning to attend with Mohsen Mahdawi, one of her constituents who was a Palestinian activist at Columbia University. Mahdawi was detained last spring as part of a crackdown on student protesters before eventually being released. Last week, a judge blocked the federal government’s attempt to deport him. “I look forward to a night of standing with colleagues, organizers, advocates, and everyday Americans who are committed to doing the real and honest work of protecting our rights, strengthening our communities, and holding those in power accountable,” Balint said in a statement. Other New England lawmakers attending the “People’s State of the Union,” include Representatives Ayanna Pressley of Boston and Chellie Pingree of Maine. Not planning to attend either event: Maine Senator Angus King: King, a political Independent, said in a statement that he will not be attending the State of the Union because of the “tremendous harm” President Trump has caused to the American people. Representative Jared Golden of Maine: Golden said in a statement he will be watching President Trump’s speech from home. Representative Jim McGovern of Worcester: McGovern will not attend the State of the Union, according to a spokesman. Rhode Island Senator Sheldon Whitehouse: Whitehouse will not attend either event but has invited Thomas Kilday, an apprentice electrician whose job was impacted by Trump’s stop-work orders on Revolution Wind, a major wind farm off the coast of Rhode Island, to attend the State of the Union. Representative Gabe Amo of Rhode Island: Amo told States Newsroom that he will be working at his desk during President Trump’s speech. However, he invited Erin Spaulding, the executive director for Connecting for Children and Families, a nonprofit that supports families in Woonsocket, R.I., to attend in his absence.
